An unknown American candy maker created the first jelly bean in the 1800s. Shaped like a little kidney, they provide the perfect bite size morsel for snacking which has certainly attributed to their popularity. During the Civil War, jelly beans were even sent to some soldiers in the Union Army as a readily available source of energy for soldiers in the field. Yes, jelly beans are not just cute and colorful candies, they are tools of war!
Jelly Belly beans were invented in 1976. They were the first jelly beans to be sold in single flavors and to come with a menu of options. Originally fruit flavored nuggets of candy, the jelly bean and Jelly Belly range has expanded over the years to include an eclectic flavor assortment with additions such as A&W Cream Soda. The soda range proved so successful that 7-UP Jelly Belly’s and A&W Root Beer were soon added to the series.
